Tips on Potty Training Your Twins
Potty training.. Simple 2 words that probably scares every multiples mum. I have laughed myself silly after reading some of the experiences that parents have while potty training. From poop being smeared all over the house to kids just freaking out when asked to sit on the potty. For parents who have older kids using potties, it might be easier since the younger ones just have to observe. If you are a first time parent however, you will have to figure out that shit on your own.
Here are a few tips that helped me potty train my twins and by the end of one month they were fully trained and the only thing that happened is that i found twin B trying to sip twin A's pee.
1. Have then with no pants for 3-5 days
When i introduced the potties, i was with them in the house for 4 days without pants. They enjoyed the freedom and also the pee more often when they don't have pants on.
2. Remind them to sit on the potty severally
Now, the potty is new to them. You have to keep reminding them to sit on it.
3. Watch videos that have cartoons sitting on potties with potty training songs
The one we mainly used was on Blippi or something. If you search YouTube, the songs will come up.
4. Praise, Clap, Act excited and Give Compliments
When either twin goes in the potty, it's your work to act excited and praise them. Have you ever imagined yourself clapping for someone for taking a dump?? Well.. It's time
5. Don't give Up
I should have started with this. Whatever happens, don't give up. At one point, my husband said all my seats and the entire house would either be smelling of urine or shit. To encourage yourself, remember you need your kid to be independent and also the diapers cost. Diapers cost is what made me keep going.
6. When an Accident happens don't shout at them
If you're a stay at home mum, you're tired and the tendency to want to scream is very high. Shouting at your kid will only make them anxious and it will make the process only longer and harder. This is a very good time to find out if you could've been a saint.
7. Have them in easy to pull down pants
Your twins were used to just going on their diapers, they still haven't figured out when they are really pressed and by the time you get to them to help with their pants, they've already peed or pooped on themselves. Easy to pull down pants will save you the trouble.
8. Have the potties easily accessible
You can eventually move the potties to the bathroom but when training them, have them wherever your kids can easily access them. This will make things easier for them and yourself.
9. Tell them they can touch each other's private parts and neither can they touch the contents in the potty
Now, i know that you're not with your kids every blinking moment. You will do dishes or even take a bathroom break. You have to let them know they can't touch whatever is in the potties. Twice, i caught my boy stirring urine with his finger and sometimes trying to take a sip. I've read stories of mums having their houses smeared in poop and you don't want to be in that situation. I also observed that they are very curious about each other's private parts. I had to keep reminding them no touching each others business.
Now, I'm sorry but if you have b/g twins, your girl will try to pee while standing..
Conclusion
In my experience, twin B who is a boy took longer and shit his pants more times than his sister. I didn't introduce him to standing while peeing immediately, i only did that later when he was fully trained.
I hope these tips help you and may your patience not fail you.
