What to Expect when your twins are in NICU for twin mums

Twins, triplets, and generally multiples are more likely to be placed in NICU than singletons. This is to the higher probability of them being born earlier and smaller than single-birth babies. Once your twins are born, the doctors assess them to determine if they are going to be placed in the NICU or not. As a twin mum, there is nothing you can do about this as you already gave the best you can give. Here is a list of things to expect when your twins are placed in the NICU.

1. Emotional turmoil

The doctors are going to inform you why they are placing your twins in the NICU. Most times twin mums beat themselves up wondering if there is something they could have done better. Dear twin mum, you gave the best you can. Your body is exhausted and beating yourself up will only get you even more tired which isn't good for you or the babies. Give yourself grace mama. You are amazing. As a mum, you will also get so scared by the what-ifs. The best way to overcome this is to have strong emotional support around you. Have people who love you around. That mother-in-law who makes snide comments? Kick her out. That aunt who thinks women who deliver preemies are weak, do call me to personally drag her out.

2. Bonding

Your twins are going to grip your hand so tight every time you reach out for them, Furthermore, there will be kangaroo care which involves holding your baby skin to skin. Your babies will be naked apart from a diaper. The nurse will help you position the baby and then cover her/him with a wrap. For twin mums, the father can hold one baby while the momma bear holds the other. This makes you grow closer as a family. You can talk or sing to your baby. This will definitely grow your bond.

3. Milestones

The most exciting thing in the NICU is when your baby hits a milestone. May it be being able to regulate their own body temperatures, being able to breathe on their own, or being bottle fed instead of tubes. You name it. For every milestone your twins hit, you will be feeling so proud of them that you think your chest will burst.

4. Very friendly staff

Unless there is a mad woman or man who was dropped in the NICU, most of the staff in that unit are usually very friendly. They are very well trained and have been dealing with a lot of cases like yours. Do ask them questions and also be nice to them.

5. Celebration

The doctors keep assessing your twins until they are sure they are ready to go home. The babies will then graduate and you will be the happiest twin mum ever. You could always send thank you cards to your amazing NICU team. Now your babies are officially ready. Go home and be happy mama. You definitely deserve it.

Bottom line

NICU time can be very draining for twin mums or any other mum. Remember your baby is fighting so please don't stop fighting too. Have emotional support and if you feel not okay, there is no shame in seeking professional help. Not to forget the bill. Please have your insurance up to date soon as you find out you are expecting twins or multiples.
